Brook Green Hotel

170 Shepherds Bush Road, Hammersmith, W6 7PB, London

Ever had the burning need for a pint at 7am in the morning? Me too. It's just a shame that the cavernous Brook Green Hotel doesn't actually serve until ten - it just throws open its doors uber-early for passing workers that fancy a fry up on the way to the daily grind.

Flask

77 Highgate West Hill, Highgate, N6 6BU, London

Strolling through green Hampstead with a stout cane in one hand and an anthology of Keates in the other is a fine way for any English person to wile away an afternoon. Where better to imbibe refreshment than at the thoroughly old school Flask?

Market Porter

9 Stoney Street, London Bridge, SE1 9AA, London

Market traders are a notoriusly good-natured bunch, though entering the Market Porter in a filthy apron bawling 'Pahnd for a pahnd guv'na!' will not make you any new friends.

Seven Stars

53 Carey Street, Aldwych, WC2A 2JB, London

To call the Seven Stars 'traditional' would be like saying that Stalin was a little bit naughty ? the place positively reeks of the stuff. It's a wonderful old joint, and as quirky as you'd ever want: run by a retired actress and managed by a resident cat, fifties film posters plaster the walls and curios dangle in every corner.

Spice of Life

37-39 Romilly Street, Soho, W1D 5AN, London

The person who named the 'Spice of Life' ? we guess it was done under before most of us were born ? deserves to have several gallons of congealed vindaloo forceably inserted into them.

The Carpenters Arms

73 Cheshire St, Bethnal Green, E2 6EG, London

Stumbling across the Carpenters is bit like finding a small wailing Chinese boy in the frozen meat section of a supermarket - something about it just seems a little out of place.

Ye Old Mitre

1 Ely Court, Ely Place, Holborn, EC1N 6SJ, London

The Olde Mitre is one of the only places known to man that actually has a right to use the word 'olde', being as it is one of London's oldest pubs. It's a little tricky to find ? look for a tiny alley branching off the main road ? though it certainly makes a wonderful sight when you do get there.

The Old White Bear

Well Road, Hampstead, NW3 1LJ, London

The flowers that drip round the White Bear's signage almost obscure the name of the place, and could lead to difficulties for elderly drinkers in actually finding the place.

Cat and Canary

1-24 Fishermans Walk,, Canary Wharf, E14 4DH, London

If you're after a stiff drink and lax conversation after a hard day at the Wharf, you could do a lot worse than to head down to the Cat and Canary, slapped right in the middle of the land of the pinstriped.

Stonemasons Arms

54 Cambridge Grove, Hammersmith, W6 0LA, London

Meander down a pleasing street off the undeniably depressing Hammersmith high street and you might just stumble across the Stone Mason's Arms, a pleasing little gaff serving some fine grub. The food really is the place's main draw - folk travel from far and wide to sample its creative and healthy-portioned menu: think quality gastropub fare, all properly sourced, with a poke towards seasonality - you won't find any strawberries in the winter round these parts.

The White Hart

22 Great Suffolk Street, Southwark, SE1 0UG, London

A wise man once whispered to me that 'builders go to good pubs'. His words of wisdom have lain forever in my mind and recently resurfaced on a visit to the White Hart, a few girders-length away from the buzz of the Southbank.
