Hootananny
95 Effra Road, Brixton, SW2 1DF, London
Spat a little distance off the unfortunately perma-jammed Effra Road, Hootananny is a gargantuum offering in every way. The garden out front - pleasingly set well back from the roaring traffic - could hold a small army, and the inside is comparable to a Munich beer hall.
The ceilings are colossally high, and a large stage dominates the scene. The place is really all about the music with live gigs being held every night of the week: the spectrum of music knows no bounds though leans heavily towards the very alternative.
A Scottish theme is the order of the day, but it doesn't get wearing, and the newspaper clippings that plaster the walls look pretty darn nice. It's also an excellent gaff to shoot some pool - there are three full size tables that have acres of space to allow proper cueing.
The drinks selection is standard, but there is a lot of choice if you like lagers and standard bitters. Food is available, and you may be surprised to hear that it?s of the Thai variety, not a deep fried chocolate pizza or battered mars bar in sight. The food selection isn?t huge, but is keenly priced and will appeal to all.
The raw stone floor tops off a venue that's rocking at night and pleasantly chilled by day - worth a visit anytime you're in Brixton.
