Lock Tavern
35 Chalk Farm Road, Camden, NW1 8AJ, London
It's not often that images of smiling bearded men whispering nice things into your ear appear as you order a pint, but in the case of the Lock Tavern, this really does happen (sometimes - apparitions are not guaranteed).
The place has just been done right - a heavy, dark wood interior with a long bar and open kitchen means that one instantly feels at peace with the world, and un-cramped and varied seating is comforting in every way - unlike similar venues, they haven't tried to maximise the pound-per-square-metre ratio by cramming punters in like salted fish.
The garden is even better - Tardis-like in it's hugeness, it can (and often does) seat literally hundreds of eager young things chatting noisily about whatever's fashionable to chat noisily about.
DJs play in the main bar sometimes - the music pipes out to the outdoor crowd - and are of excellent quality, the bar being involved in organising the muso 'Field Day' festy. The food also deserves a mention, as it's truly excellent pub fare with some of the best tasting chips, juicy burgers and thick steaks - all at decent prices - are a great addition to a nigh perfect establishment. Arrive early and get a table early because the beer garden fills up quick, and rightly so.
