Being a bit of legend in the Brixton area means that Dogstar has its reputation to think of. It may have had its up and downs in recent years, but the old haunt still has a lot going for it - the semi-recent addition of super-quality Mexican food - some say its amongst the best in the whole city - certainly adds something to the place, and a plate of fresh guacamole and tortillas is welcome addition to a round of ice cold bottled beers (of which they have loads).

If you like your beers real, your music loud and your crowd fun, then the Half Moon deserved an immediate and thorough checking out. It's a venue renowned for live music, housing a huge stage in the main room and no less than three other bars dotted throughout the venue.

If you ever find yourself fidgeting and thirsty in the East End, you could do a lot worse than head down to the fairly inconspicuous Vibe Bar, tacked onto a sprawling courtyard on Brick Lane.

Spat a little distance off the unfortunately perma-jammed Effra Road, Hootananny is a gargantuum offering in every way. The garden out front - pleasingly set well back from the roaring traffic - could hold a small army, and the inside is comparable to a Munich beer hall.

The near twenty-four hour riot that spills out of the Brixton underground station needs a pub to soak up the bedraggled survivors, and the Prince Albert does a fine job. It's certainly not a polished place - don't expect anything other than a strong drink in a warm glass - but it's not bad for it.

Run by a clearly eccentric pair of Swedish brothers, Garlic and Shots does exactly what it says on the tin plus a bit of food too: all dripping in garlic. It's a novel idea and was successful in the branch in Stockholm, so the Swedes decided to try it in Soho (and, curiously, Parma).
