Best for Atmosphere in London

Best For Atmosphere

The crowd is lively and up for it, you've got a fifty burning a hole in your pocket and a fitty has just brushed past your arse. Times like this make you happy just to be alive.

Dogstar

389 Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, SW9 8LQ, London

Being a bit of legend in the Brixton area means that Dogstar has its reputation to think of. It may have had its up and downs in recent years, but the old haunt still has a lot going for it - the semi-recent addition of super-quality Mexican food - some say its amongst the best in the whole city - certainly adds something to the place, and a plate of fresh guacamole and tortillas is welcome addition to a round of ice cold bottled beers (of which they have loads).

Lock Tavern

35 Chalk Farm Road, Camden, NW1 8AJ, London

It's not often that images of smiling bearded men whispering nice things into your ear appear as you order a pint, but in the case of the Lock Tavern, this really does happen (sometimes - apparitions are not guaranteed).

Lonsdale

44-48 Lonsdale Road, Westbourne Grove, W11 2DE, London

If you've ever wanted to sip cocktails in a place that resembles a cross between a forty-year-old copy of 'Good Housekeeping' and an eBayed second-hand Austin Powers set, the Lonsdale is the perfect man for the job.

Market Porter

9 Stoney Street, London Bridge, SE1 9AA, London

Market traders are a notoriusly good-natured bunch, though entering the Market Porter in a filthy apron bawling 'Pahnd for a pahnd guv'na!' will not make you any new friends.

Old Queens Head

For a quality boozer that doubles up as a decent club in its own right, one can't go too wrong with a swift half at the Old Queen's Head.

Seven Stars

53 Carey Street, Aldwych, WC2A 2JB, London

To call the Seven Stars 'traditional' would be like saying that Stalin was a little bit naughty ? the place positively reeks of the stuff. It's a wonderful old joint, and as quirky as you'd ever want: run by a retired actress and managed by a resident cat, fifties film posters plaster the walls and curios dangle in every corner.

Spice of Life

37-39 Romilly Street, Soho, W1D 5AN, London

The person who named the 'Spice of Life' ? we guess it was done under before most of us were born ? deserves to have several gallons of congealed vindaloo forceably inserted into them.

Vibe Bar

Old Truman Brewery, 91-95 Brick Lane, Shoreditch, E1 6QL, London

If you ever find yourself fidgeting and thirsty in the East End, you could do a lot worse than head down to the fairly inconspicuous Vibe Bar, tacked onto a sprawling courtyard on Brick Lane.

Hootananny

95 Effra Road, Brixton, SW2 1DF, London

Spat a little distance off the unfortunately perma-jammed Effra Road, Hootananny is a gargantuum offering in every way. The garden out front - pleasingly set well back from the roaring traffic - could hold a small army, and the inside is comparable to a Munich beer hall.

Prince Albert

418 Coldharbour Lane , Brixton, SW9 8LF, London

The near twenty-four hour riot that spills out of the Brixton underground station needs a pub to soak up the bedraggled survivors, and the Prince Albert does a fine job. It's certainly not a polished place - don't expect anything other than a strong drink in a warm glass - but it's not bad for it.

Jacks Bar

96 Isabella Street, Waterloo, SE1 8DA, London

Whoever thought of using the bits underneath the beautiful arches of Waterloo station was a bit of a genius. Jack's Bar has the privilege of being granted one such arch, and the place is a fantastic place to while away a cocktail ? all two-for-one in the after-work happy hour(s) ? whilst catting-off about the new man in HR.

Garlic and Shots

14 Frith Street, Soho, W1D 4RD, London

Run by a clearly eccentric pair of Swedish brothers, Garlic and Shots does exactly what it says on the tin plus a bit of food too: all dripping in garlic. It's a novel idea and was successful in the branch in Stockholm, so the Swedes decided to try it in Soho (and, curiously, Parma).
